DESCRIPTION:As Ireland marks a half century of LGBT activism\, Kilkenny Castle is delighted to host a talk by Tonie Walsh\, founder of the Irish Queer Archives. The talk will trace the evolution of queer activism on the island of Ireland; from the formation of Belfast’s Gay Liberation Society (1972) and the hugely influential Sexual Liberation Movement (1973) at Dublin’s TCD to the establishment of community resources and mainstream advocacy groups across all our cities and large towns.\nThis is a potted history of the LGBT civil rights movement as it fights state-sponsored homophobia\, cycles of violence\, media and government censorship and conservative Christian values to advance visibility and Senator David Norris’ Constitutional Action; following decriminalisation\, the advent of equality legislation throughout the 1990s\, culminating in the Equal Status Act in 2000 and\, fifteen years later\, Marriage Equality and the Gender Recognition Act.\nIrish LGBT liberation didn’t happen in a vacuum; important political and socio-cultural currents like the Northern Irish civil rights movement and the second wave of feminism\, even membership of the EU\, all impacted on the movement for change. \nThis event is free\, seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis.\nDoors open 30 minutes before start of event.\nFor information contact Kilkenny Castle team on 046 942 3020 / kilkennycastleinfo@opw.ie

DESCRIPTION:OPW Kilkenny Castle is delighted to host the John Bradley Memorial lecture once again on Friday 27 October at the Parade Tower.\nThe speaker this year will be Gerard Crotty\, a retired teacher who has been interested in heraldry for many years.\n\nTalk: Making Sense of Heraldry :\nCoats of arms have been borne by families and individuals ever since they first appeared in battle and tournament in the twelfth century. As brightly coloured devices on banner and shield\, they served to distinguish one mail-clad knight from another. With the passage of time\, they became hereditary and can be seen today on monuments and as decoration in manuscripts\, stained glass and many other media\, where they can convey much information about the families who bore them.\n\nReception at Kilkenny Castle 6pm followed by talk 7pm\nConference Supper\, Club House\, Kilkenny\, 8.15pm (Optional) Lecture and Reception €15. DESCRIPTION:The King’s Harper: The Irish Harp at the 17th-century English Court \nIn 1605\, King James I of England employed the first ‘royal’ Irish harper to work at the court in London: Cormac MacDermott. This gave rise to an extraordinary ensemble in which the melting sound of his early Irish harp’s brass-wire strings was woven together with the lute\, Renaissance viols\, and the human voice to produce an exquisite music for the king’s pleasure. \nConcerts take place live in Kilkenny. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Pride Month\, OPW-Kilkenny Castle is delighted to host a talk by Dr Anthony Delaney on Saturday 10th June at 3pm in the Parade Tower.\nThis talk explores ideas of gender and sexuality in the Georgian and Victorian Ireland\, initially by centering Kilkenny Castle’s inherent queerness\, before zooming out to consider Kilkenny\, and then the country more boradly. It asks how queer Irish people at this time understood and expressed their gender non-conforming identity\, particularly in the context of Ireland and Irishness. It also examines how we might best explore and communicate these histories to reflect the context of the times in which each protagonist lived\, and how this informs questions around gender and sexuality today.\nThis event is free\, seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis.\nAs an actor\, Anthony has worked across stage and screen since he graduated from the Central School of Speech and Drama\, London in 2010. Doors open at 7:30pm. \nSpeaker : Dr Mary Forrest – ‘Trees in Ireland – Distinguished natives and honoured guests‘ \nMary is an acclaimed UCD lecturer of long standing\, in landscape architecture\, horticulture and garden history. She will share insights with us from her extensive knowledge of trees in Ireland. This will be invaluable information gleaned from decades of learning and experience. This promises to be a wonderful talk.

He has recently taken over the gardens at Ashford Castle in Mayo. As one of the great new go-ahead gardeners\, we are delighted to have him share some of his knowledge with us. This will be a talk that anyone who wants to grow vegetables should not miss.

As usual\, there will be a wide range of speakers\, covering a variety of topics. \nAll talks are free and entry is on a first come first served basis. Doors open at 7:30pm. \nSpeaker : Colm O Driscoll – ‘Grow Soil- Harvest Food‘ \nColm O’Driscoll first came to public notice working the restored historic gardens at Airfield in South Dublin. He has recently taken over as head gardener in the even older and unique Lismore Castle Garden.  Colm can also be found presenting the new RTE programme on horticulture ‘Homegrown’ and writing on gardening in ‘The Irish Garden Magazine.’ He is a keen and expert organic gardener.

As usual\, there will be a wide range of speakers\, covering a variety of topics. \nAll talks are free and entry is on a first come first served basis. Doors open at 7:30pm. \nSpeaker: Roger Goodwillie – ‘Wildlife Lessons From the Garden‘. \nEcologist and author Roger Goodwillie\, is known as one of the most knowledgeble wildlife experts in Ireland. From his renowned mushroom foraging walks\, tours of the Burren and advisory scientific reports on the natural world\, Roger is one of our best informed speakers on ecology and biodiversity. We are fortunate to have  secured him for what will be an important talk.

She writes about gardening in the Irish Garden as well as a popular blog as The Insomniac Gardener. She is well known for her friendly and common sense approach to gardening.
