SUMMARY:Music in Kilkenny Concert : Vanbrugh & Friends
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAMME & PERFORMERS\nKeith Pascoe – violin : Marja Gaynor – violin : Simon Aspell – viola : Ed Creedon – viola : Christopher Marwood – cello \n\n\n\n\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart String Quintet No. 6 in Eb Major\, K. 614 \nJohannes Brahms String Quintet No. 1 in F Major\, op. 88 \nFelix Mendelssohn String Quintet No. 2 in Bb Major\, op. 87 \n \nMozart always brings charm\, elegance and wit\, however harsh his circumstances\, and nowhere more so than in his gorgeous E flat major string quintet\, written in the last year of his short life along with the Magic Flute\, the clarinet concerto and the Requiem. \nBrahms wrote his F major quintet ‘in the spring of 1882’ and the resulting nickname of ‘Spring’ Quintet is perfect for this extraordinarily uplifting\, fresh and joyful music. \nThe irrepressibly virtuosic outer movements of Mendelssohn’s B flat quintet offer great contrast to an elegantly playful scherzo and perhaps the highlight of the work\, the anguished and yet profoundly beautiful Funeral March.

SUMMARY:Historical Talk: The National Flag of Ireland
DESCRIPTION:Join local Kilkenny Historian & retired military officer Commandant Larry Scallan on Sunday\, 15th of March at 2pm in the Parade Tower to listen to a talk on Ireland’s national flag as part of  St. Patrick’s Festival Kilkenny 2026. \nThe Irish tricolour is one of the most recognisable symbols of Ireland\, carrying deep historical and political meaning. It was first introduced in 1848 by Thomas Francis Meagher\, during a period of revolutionary thought across Europe. Influenced by the French tricolour\, it was intended as a symbol of reconciliation rather than division. Although associated with the Young Ireland movement\, the flag did not gain widespread recognition until it was flown during the Easter Rising of 1916. Following independence\, it was adopted as the national flag of the Irish Free State and later the Republic. The design of three vertical panels of green\, white and orange reflects an aspiration for peace and mutual respect. While its display is guided by established protocol\, the flag’s real importance lies in what it represents. It is hoped that this talk helps people better understand the Irish flag\, its history\, and how it can be used with respect and understanding.

SUMMARY:Historical Talk: James Stephens (1825 – 1901) Life and Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Join local Kilkenny Historian & retired military officer Commandant Larry Scallan on Saturday\, 14th of March at 2pm in the Parade Tower to listen to a talk on ‘James Stephens (1825- 1901): Life and Legacy’ as part of  St. Patrick’s Festival Kilkenny 2026.\n\nJames Stephens was one of the pivotal figures of 19th-century Irish nationalism. Best remembered as the founder and chief organiser of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB)\, he dedicated his life to the pursuit of Irish independence through revolutionary means. His story is one of resilience\, clandestine organisation\, and political vision—spanning the failed Young Ireland rebellion of 1848\, years of exile\, the creation of a transatlantic revolutionary network\, the rising of 1867 its failings and legacy and his contested leadership in later years.

DESCRIPTION:OPW Kilkenny Castle is delighted to once again host a number of concerts with Music in Kilkenny. The programme is available now at www.musicinkilkenny.org  \nKeith Pascoe – violin / Marja Gaynor – violin / Simon Aspell – viola / Ed Creedon – viola / Christopher Marwood – cello / Maria O’Connor – cello \nPROGRAMME & PERFORMERS\n\n\n\nLuigi Boccherini String Quintet in E major G.402 \nCharles Villiers Stanford String Quintet in F major Op.85 \nAntonin Dvořák String Sextet in A major Op.48 \nThe very last of well over one hundred string quintets written by the prolific virtuoso cellist Luigi Boccherini\, this charming work is characteristically refined and elegant. Dublin born Charles Villiers Stanford was a significant figure in musical life in the late 19th and early 20th century\, influential as composer\, teacher and conductor. His cheerful and uplifting F major string quintet was recorded by the Vanbrugh Quartet and Garth Knox in 2004 and features a lovely central slow movement inspired by sean-nós singing. \nDvořák’s A major string sextet is truly one of the treasures and great joys of all chamber music. Its gentle optimism offers a precious contrast to the difficulties and complexities of our modern world.

SUMMARY:Music in Kilkenny Concert Series: The Vanbrugh & Friends
DESCRIPTION:OPW Kilkenny Castle is pleased to support Music in Kilkenny Concert Series once again. The concerts take place in different venues in Kilkenny throughout the season. The Parade Tower\, Kilkenny Castle is delighted to host four of these\, the first of which takes place on Sunday 6 October at 3pm. \nThe Vanbrugh & Friends\nKeith Pascoe – violin\, Marja Gaynor – violin\, Simon Aspell – viola\, Ed Creedon – viola\, Christopher Marwood – cello\, Maria O’Connor – cello \nProgramme: \nNikolai Rimsky-Korsakov – String Sextet in A major \nFranz Schubert – String Quintet in C major D.956 \nMonumental\, intimate\, dreamy\, earthy\, triumphant\, despairing… Schubert’s extraordinary string quintet is all of these things and more. It was the last completed work of the terminally ill 31-year-old composer and is recognised as one of the greatest works in Western music. Rimsky-Korsakov’s 1876 string sextet is\, by contrast\, a seldom played rarity\, but is full of charm and invention\, exploiting the rich sonority of the six instruments to the full and featuring a lyrical and expressive slow movement. \nThe Vanbrugh has evolved from the work of the Vanbrugh Quartet which was based in Cork as RTE’s Resident Quartet from 1986 to 2013 and as Artists-in-Residence at University College\, Cork from 1990 until the retirement of violinist Gregory Ellis in 2017. Over three decades the quartet gave close to three thousand concerts\, presenting the chamber music repertoire to audiences throughout Ireland\, Europe\, the Americas\, and the Far East. Commercial recordings include more than thirty CDs of repertoire ranging from the complete Beethoven quartets to many contemporary Irish works. In 2016 the group was presented with the National Concert Hall’s Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of their contribution to music in Ireland. Keith Pascoe\, Simon Aspell\, and Christopher Marwood continue to perform together as the nucleus of the Vanbrugh and are joined by guest artists for performances of a wide range of chamber music repertoire.
