SUMMARY:National Playday on Saturday 13 July at Kilkenny Castle Park
DESCRIPTION:National Playday 2024 organised by Kilkenny County Council takes place on Saturday 13 July 2024. The theme this year is “fun for families”.   This FREE event kindly hosted by the OPW and Kilkenny Castle will start at 11am and finish at 1pm.  The Community Team will be based near the playground\, do come along to visit the various workshops on the day including face painting\, a magician\, art and biodiversity workshops.  Along with the event partners – Healthy Ireland and CYPSE we aim to support the importance of creating time and space for families to have fun together.  \nCome and be a part of this community event and most importantly have some fun!    \nPlay is vital to supporting children’s development\, learning and wellbeing. It encourages a sense of adventure and discovery\, helping young minds to better understand the world around them through fun and creative ways. This National Play Day is an opportunity for Kilkenny County Council and our partners to invite children and their families to come together in the grounds of Kilkenny Castle and take part in a range of activities that everyone can enjoy. DESCRIPTION:OPW Kilkenny Castle is very pleased to welcome Scoil na gCláirseach – Festival of Early Irish Harp\, which returns to Kilkenny this July.  Two evening concerts as follows will be hosted at The Parade Tower. \nSUNDAY 28 JULY\, 8:00 pm\nMASTERS OF IRISH MUSIC\nDoimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde\, voice\nSiobhán Armstrong\, early Irish harp\nMartin Tourish\, accordion \nA one-off gathering of three of Ireland’s leading performers of evocative\, soulful Irish music. Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde\, the prize-winning sean-nós [‘old style’] singer\, will perform with Siobhán Armstrong\, Ireland’s foremost performer on the ancient Irish\, brass-wire-strung harp. Musician and composer\, Martin Tourish\, [Young Musician of the Year\, 2008]\, makes a rare Kilkenny appearance also\, in an evening of solo singing and harpers’ songs from the ancient Irish harping tradition\, together with lively instrumental music.  Presented in the late 12c Parade Tower of Kilkenny Castle.  \nTUESDAY 30 JULY\, 8:00 pm\nGIVE ME YOUR HAND – MUSIC OF THE 1600S FOR A GAELIC CASTLE\nAllan MacDonald\, voice and small pipes\nTamzin Elliott\, early Irish harp\nRóisín O’Grady\, soprano\nToby Carr\, Renaissance lute  \nDescribed as ‘the single most important living source of Gaelic musical culture’\, acclaimed Scottish piper\, and singer\, Allan MacDonald\, makes a rare Kilkenny appearance this July.  He will be joined by historical harpist\, Tamzin Elliott – in their Irish debut – playing the ravishing\, ancient Irish harp\, with its rare brass-wire strings.
