SUMMARY:Historical Talk: The National Flag of Ireland
DESCRIPTION:Join local Kilkenny Historian & retired military officer Commandant Larry Scallan on Sunday\, 15th of March at 2pm in the Parade Tower to listen to a talk on Ireland’s national flag as part of  St. Patrick’s Festival Kilkenny 2026. \nThe Irish tricolour is one of the most recognisable symbols of Ireland\, carrying deep historical and political meaning. It was first introduced in 1848 by Thomas Francis Meagher\, during a period of revolutionary thought across Europe. Influenced by the French tricolour\, it was intended as a symbol of reconciliation rather than division. Although associated with the Young Ireland movement\, the flag did not gain widespread recognition until it was flown during the Easter Rising of 1916. Following independence\, it was adopted as the national flag of the Irish Free State and later the Republic. The design of three vertical panels of green\, white and orange reflects an aspiration for peace and mutual respect. While its display is guided by established protocol\, the flag’s real importance lies in what it represents. It is hoped that this talk helps people better understand the Irish flag\, its history\, and how it can be used with respect and understanding.

SUMMARY:Historical Talk: James Stephens (1825 – 1901) Life and Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Join local Kilkenny Historian & retired military officer Commandant Larry Scallan on Saturday\, 14th of March at 2pm in the Parade Tower to listen to a talk on ‘James Stephens (1825- 1901): Life and Legacy’ as part of  St. Patrick’s Festival Kilkenny 2026.\n\nJames Stephens was one of the pivotal figures of 19th-century Irish nationalism. Best remembered as the founder and chief organiser of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB)\, he dedicated his life to the pursuit of Irish independence through revolutionary means. His story is one of resilience\, clandestine organisation\, and political vision—spanning the failed Young Ireland rebellion of 1848\, years of exile\, the creation of a transatlantic revolutionary network\, the rising of 1867 its failings and legacy and his contested leadership in later years.

SUMMARY:John Bradley Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:OPW Kilkenny Castle is delighted to host the John Bradley Memorial lecture once again on Friday 27 October at the Parade Tower.\nThe speaker this year will be Gerard Crotty\, a retired teacher who has been interested in heraldry for many years.\n\nTalk: Making Sense of Heraldry :\nCoats of arms have been borne by families and individuals ever since they first appeared in battle and tournament in the twelfth century. As brightly coloured devices on banner and shield\, they served to distinguish one mail-clad knight from another. With the passage of time\, they became hereditary and can be seen today on monuments and as decoration in manuscripts\, stained glass and many other media\, where they can convey much information about the families who bore them.\n\nReception at Kilkenny Castle 6pm followed by talk 7pm\nConference Supper\, Club House\, Kilkenny\, 8.15pm (Optional) Lecture and Reception €15. Conference Supper €30.\n\nFor more information see www.kilkennyarchaeologicalsociety.ie or call 056 7722893 (Rothe House)

SUMMARY:Queer Irish lives in the 18th and 19th centuries: An arsy-versy history of Lady Butler\, Ms Ponsonby\, Dr Barry\, and Mr and Mrs De Lacy Evans.
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Pride Month\, OPW-Kilkenny Castle is delighted to host a talk by Dr Anthony Delaney on Saturday 10th June at 3pm in the Parade Tower.\nThis talk explores ideas of gender and sexuality in the Georgian and Victorian Ireland\, initially by centering Kilkenny Castle’s inherent queerness\, before zooming out to consider Kilkenny\, and then the country more boradly. It asks how queer Irish people at this time understood and expressed their gender non-conforming identity\, particularly in the context of Ireland and Irishness. It also examines how we might best explore and communicate these histories to reflect the context of the times in which each protagonist lived\, and how this informs questions around gender and sexuality today.\nThis event is free\, seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis.\nAs an actor\, Anthony has worked across stage and screen since he graduated from the Central School of Speech and Drama\, London in 2010. Last year\, Anthony completed his PhD at the University of Exeter investigating Cotqueans: Queer Domesticity in eighteenth-century England.\n????Lithograph by J.H. Lynch\, 183-\, after Mary Parker (later Lady Leighton)\, 1828. Sarah Ponsonby (left) and Lady Eleanor Butler\, known as the Ladies of Llangollen\, outside with a dog. Wellcome Library no. 2444i Photo number: V0007359\n????Portrait of James Barry\, artist and date unknown. Wikimedia Commons/Museum Africa\, Johannesburg\n????: Nicholas White\, photographer.
