The Twentieth Century
In 1935 the contents of the castle were put up for sale that lasted over a period of ten days. The castle buildings deteriorated during a period of neglect until 1967 whenJames Arthur Butler (1893-1971), 6th Marquess of Ormonde, generously presented Kilkenny Castle to members of the Kilkenny Castle Restoration Committee for a sum of £50. James Hubert Butler (1899-1997), MBE, 7th Marquess of Ormonde, was the last member of the Butler family to inherit the Ormonde titles.
