Kilkenny Arts Festival 2017

Friday 11th to Sunday 20th August

As part of Kilkenny Arts Festival, now in its 44th year, the OPW is delighted to host a major Programme in Kilkenny Castle and Park. This year there is an emphasis on understanding great historic artists & their works alongside current trends in composition, performance and collaboration.

Echoing this year’s SCHUBERT theme, international cultural perspectives are strongly represented in the Castle Programme. Continuing his annual series of presentations, composer Gerry Murphy discusses The Man Behind the Music, while leading ‘Schubertarian’ Lorraine Byrne Bodley (NUI Maynooth) offers fresh insights into later compositions in Late Works or Last Works?  Renowned pianist and Schubert performer Alfred Brendel (Aus) reflects on his artistic development in My Musical Life. Broadcaster and critic Ian Fox presents a selection of famous Schubert recordings from the inter-war years in Legendary Lieder – Great Schubert Interpretations on 78s.

The Castle’s exquisite Picture Gallery is the venue to mark the 275th anniversary of Handel’s ‘Irish Adventure’ with a celebration of his brilliant keyboard compositions by the highly-regarded harpsichordist Philippe Grisvard (Fra) in Mr Handel at the Keyboard.  Prof Samantha Owens (NZ) discusses 18th century musical life in Ireland with The Irish State Musick.   Iarla Ó Lionáird explores the influences which have shaped Irish traditional music in Making Peace With Place

Original fiction writer Yiyun Li (China/USA) discusses her forthcoming memoir, and 20th century history-buffs will be fascinated by Churchill’s Irish Generals by Maj Gen Andrew Richie (UK, Sandhurst) & Niall Burgess (Sec Gen, Dept Foreign Affairs).

All age groups will enjoy Architects of Air’s (UK) luminarium 'ALBESILA' which is a light-and-sound installation in the Park grounds.  Secret Garden Music will take place in the Rose Garden, as a range of artists offer pop-up performances.  Poetry is represented by Poet-in-Residence Paula Meehan who launches the Kilkenny Poetry Broadsheet, an annual showcase of local writers.

Topically, this year Sir Stephen Wall (UK), former Ambassador to the EU, asks Whither Britain & Europe? and leading Irish architectural firm O’Donnell & Tuomey make a presentation of European cultural and educational projects in Here and There.
